Enterprise Customers require Enterprise-class Monitoring (Hear me, Citrix?)

In the past there have been many rumours about EdgeSight being discontinued. It’s less than two weeks to the release of XenDesktop 7 and now that Citrix is offering more and more insight, it’s time to take a closer look at the monitoring facilities in XenDesktop 7.

Offline Servicing of VHDs against WSUS

Every month we are hit by Microsoft’s patchday. And every month the same workflow fires: learn about updates, test them, approve necessary updates, check compliance of machines and manually fix machines with failed updates . But don’t think you are done. You still need to update VM templates so that new VMs have the latest updates. I’d like to provide you with a useful script to automate this important task.

How to enable all Wi-Fi channels on the US Surface Pro

Did you know that there are subtle differences how Wi-Fi works depending on the geographical region you are in? For example, you may have issues operating a US device in Europe. The device will not be able to see or connect to some wireless networks.

Multi-Homed Servers and Windows Firewall Profile

I recently stumbled across the issue that a domain-joined host applied the domain profile of the Windows Firewall to all network connections. It seems this is by design because the Network Location Awareness stops evaluating network conditions as soon as the domain membership was discovered. Read on to learn how to force the firewall to apply different profiles to different network conditions.

Looking back at two months with the Surface Pro

Ever since the Surface Pro was announced by Microsoft (review on The Verge), I was sure that this will become my new primary device. Two months ago I had the chance to get my hands on one of them and have been using it ever since. This will not be yet another review. It will be about my experiences, my enthusiasm and the compromises I had to take.

Book about Hyper-V

It has been rather quiet in this blog and on Twitter as well. In fact, I have been working on a related project with three other IT Pros that has consumed a lot of my available time. I can finally break the silence and make the announcement that in Juli, Galileo Press will publishing our (German) book about Hyper-V and System Center.

What's Wrong with Desktop User Interfaces

When Helge Klein and Ingmar Verheij publicly displayed their start menu, I found this to be a very intruiging idea. As I have switched to Windows 8 starting with the Consumer Preview in February 2012, I don’t have a start menu anymore. But still there are several applications that I use regularly.

Second Prompt for User Credentials in Remote Desktop Services

In a recent deployment of Remote Desktop Services with Windows Server 2012, I experienced a second prompt for credentials. It occurred after successfully authenticating with Remote Desktop WebAccess  and launching a RemoteApp from the browser. This blog explains why the second prompt is shown and how to get rid of it.

Accessing a Cloud-Based Demo Environment - Destination NAT or Reverse Proxy?

Several months ago I moved my entire demo environment to the cloud. Before that I was struggeling with the limitations of my laptop. Instead of sacrificing mobility for performance, I decided that its worth the extra money to rent a hardware box in the cloud. But then I was facing new obstacles when demonstrating use cases. The virtual machines are isolated in a virtual LAN which is not accessible publicly. In the end, it became a question of using destination network address translation (DNAT) or a reverse proxy to seemlessly access the virtual LAN.

On 12.10.2012 I held a session at the NRWconf in Wuppertal about why vendors are pushing UEFI to replace BIOS with the release of Windows 8. Attached you’ll find my slides.
